Barkbeth Wood is located within the Lake District National Park close to both Keswick and Cockermouth and with great views over Bassenthwaite Lake and the northern fells.
The wood has good access from the road along a solid woodland track. Once within the woodland you will enjoy its wild feel. It is of mixed character with native broadleaf trees, conifers and open areas. During the spring much of the woodland is carpeted in bluebells; growing alongside these there is also an abundance of other plant species including primroses, wood sorrel, pignut, ferns and bracken as well as some occasional patches of wild garlic. Trees found within the wood include many oak trees which show signs of being coppiced in the past, some hazel, birch, ash, rowan and also some spruce and larch.
The varied array of ground flora and tree species here provide plenty of food, cover and habitat for the local wildlife population as well as seasonal visitors. In evidence here are badger, roe deer and squirrel and many bird species are also present. Just spend some time quietly in the wood and you will be surprised what comes along.
The woodland is on the National Inventory and is classified as 'Ancient Replanted' aka 'PAWS' (to see the map go to www.magic.gov.uk select interactive maps, topic = habitat inventories then put in the grid ref from these details)
The woodland is suitable for conservation and there are flat areas which could be used for occasional camping trips and it provides the ideal location to explore the surrounding area.
The purchasers of the woodland will be asked to enter into a covenant to ensure the quiet and peaceful enjoyment of adjoining woodlands and meadows.
