Description: Norman Wood is peacefully situated on a gentle slope below the top of Norman's Law Hill and is largely a semi-mature (PAWS) Scots pine, Norway spruce and sycamore woodland with native broadleaves naturally regenerating harmoniously amongst the conifers.
The woodland has 3 areas defined by a combination of small valley channels and old dyke walls. To the north is a corner area of open Scots pine adjoining a block of denser spruce trees planted on a stone dyke encircled knoll. Some minor selective felling here would let more light in and could provide distant easterly or westerly views. The main southern half is teeming with wildlife amongst the open Scots pine, elegant sycamores, elders and ash, with evident busy woodpeckers. There is a sunny clearing in the middle of this area ideal for occasional camping, unwinding and sensing nature.
Internal access is provided via the newly created entrance about two thirds of the way up the western track boundary. From here a grassy 4x4 path winds its way further up into the wood to the sunny clearing.
Access: There is a full right of access over a shared private road and woodland track leading up the hill for about 1 mile after turning off the A913. There is a slightly shorter entrance track and right of access from the minor road between Fliskmillan Farm and Brunton village to the north of Norman Wood.
Sporting Rights: These are owned and included with the land. The shooting rights are currently let until February 2010.
Surrounding area: Norman Wood is situated in north Fife on the old Ayton Estate near the top of the Ayton Hill woods. The rural area, rolling hills and abundance of semi-natural ancient woodland makes this part of Fife particularly attractive to wild fauna and flora including red squirrels and grey squirrels, roe deer, bluebells, primroses and wood anemones. The highest hill in northeast Fife is Norman's Law (part of the Ochil Hills) and this commanding 360° vantage point and site of an iron age fort is only a short walk from the woodland. Newburgh and Cupar are about 7 miles away with St. Andrews, Dundee and Perth all within 30 minutes drive. Edinburgh and Stirling are just over 60 mins drive away.
The purchasers of the woodland will be asked to enter into a covenant to ensure the quiet and peaceful enjoyment of adjoining woodlands and meadows.
