Yea its tough going at first as there are so many animals out (especially the countries where snow falls at winter times) who are looking for an easy bite - the tree bark :S

i have recently aquired some 18 acres of land and was wondering if anyone had any ideas what i could do with the land to make a living . i have thought about tree planting for wood and forestry and also the christmas tree market, but i would need to raise some money for the purchase of the first trees etc does anyone know if there are grants available or ongoing for this type of thing or any other ideas , also the idea of lowering our carbon footprint is appealing to me so if i can stay green all te better
thanks

Hi my name is Jonathan Houde, I'm a canadian and i just receive a working holiday visa for your country. so i would like to know if you guys could help me to find a job. I don't even know if you guys do that in the UK, but i'm a treeplanter(industrial like, i'm not planting trees in parks... i'm planting huge areas after they were some logging. to give you an idea i planted 600 000 trees in the last 4 summer). If you do plant trees, is it possible for you to put me in contact with some of the companies that does that? or if it's impossible for you to give me this information, can you give me the name of some big logging company, they will know who plant trees for them.

Thank you very much!

I recently did the Tree Planting course with BTCV in Ashord and it was very good. Mike Phillips who let it was very enthusiastic and knows all kinds of good stuff. Definately worth going.

There were some key points that I picked up.
Why plant? As Richard said Natural regeneration could be fine - although planting speeds things up a bit - but what do we plant? Only trees native to this country? There have been mistakes made in the past regarding species we have brought in

and planting whips (small ones) is easier, cheaper and they are more likely to survive!
And you have to dig a smaller hole!

Last year I tidied up an area of woodland that had'nt been touched for at least 20 yrs.The 2 acres had been greatly affected by the 1987 storm with trees growing out of the fallen or half fallen trunks. There are lots of roots exposed and root bowls making the site uneven in places.

I've put 100 hazel whips in last year which suffered from some deer munchig the tops. The hazel grow quickly and soon stood tall of the tree guards so I decided to fence the area.As there is a sweet chestnut coppice available I used these for the bigger trees for fence posts and thinner stems for the rails with some brash weaved in between. It took a while but I'm really pleased with the end result.

I'm also planning to put some willow in nearby as I've got plans to use this alomg with the hazel.I'm hoping to gradualy replace the conifers with native trees. As the whole wood is only 23 acres ther's little to be gained from applying for a grant.Lucky for me my wife enjoys the woods otherwise I'd be leaving a wood widow behind.
