Wood for Fuel

Wood for Fuel

A wood fuel theme to the blog this week ... Useful advice from Gillian Alker of the Forestry Commission on using and producing wood for fuel in two video clips by Woodlands TV.  In the first, "Wood for Fuel",  she discusses different types:  logs, wood chips and pellets, and seasoning wood.  In the second, "Grants for Wood Burning", Gillian gives advice on grants, transportation and  smokeless zones.

Lots more discussions, demos and tips at http://www.woodlandstv.co.uk/

Interesting content on Logs, chips and pellets… but but next time see if they can get a quieter place to film or ask people close by to lower their voices as I found the other conversation off camera very intrusive.

Don’t feel stupid – thats the story of wood fuel still – lack of information & people making the same mistakes time and time again. The best place to go is the FC run online Biomass Energy Centre which has stacks more really good practical advice.

And here’s a tip for you, Dave – if you’re doing firewood a good test of your system – and your likely costs – is just how many times you handle the wood by hand rather than machine. One of the best approaches I’ve seen for loca deliveries is to use the big bags used for delivering fertiliser and other farm produce – all sorts of advantages, including the customer being able to judge quantity more easliy, with a cheap crane no hand handling, once its in the bag that wood is simple to shift around.

wow… what a revelation…. ive spent a few thousand pounds buying saws, shredders and log splitters etc in order to branch out (excuse the pun) into firewood sales and distribution…. and in just a few minutes i’ve learnt more than in the last 6 months…I feel a bit silly saying that. I really need to contact the forestry commission and find out what else I can do in order to make my business a success.

Many thanks
