The woodland slopes gently down the valley, where at its lower boundary it meets rolling open pasture. From this point there are magnificent open views across the Avon valley in both directions along the route of the Kennet And Avon Canal and the river Avon. This entire area of woodland was originally owned and managed by Warleigh Manor the seat of the Skrine family from before 1400 until 1956 when Anne Dorothea Skrine died a spinster, aged 81. The present Warleigh Manor, which can be seen at certain times of year, was built to the design of the Staffordshire architect Neale Webb and completed in 1851. In 1986 the house was sold and converted for use as a residential school for troubled youths known as Warleigh School. During this time maintenance and upkeep of the house was virtually non-existent and in 1998 the house was sold and converted into apartments.
There is a an interesting range of wild fungus to be found in the vicinity, in particular there have been recent sightings of the relatively uncommon Magpie inkcap and Jews Ear fungus, a much sought after edible variety popular in Oriental cuisine.
There is no immediate road boundaty to Avon View Wood. Access is via a track through neighbouring woodland. The wood can also be approached via footpaths from several directions. From the A4 take the A363 Bradford-on-Avon road. Follow this road for about 1 mile as it climbs the side of the valley and enters a wooded area with trees on both sides of the road. After a sharp left hand bend proceed for another 400 metres at which point the entrance to Bath Valley Wood can be seen immediately prior to a Woodlands.co.uk sign board on your right hand side where it is possible to pull off the road and park in front of the padlocked gate. The owner of this woodland will be given a key to this gate. Proceed for approximately 300 metres along the woodland track until you reach a gate. The sign for Avon View Wood can be seen here.
