Buckbury Wood, named after a place in the Thomas Hardy novel 'The Woodlanders' which was reputedly set in this area, probably formed part of the Royal Forest of Blackmore which dates from the 11th and 12th centuries. Although the wood we see today is more recent, there are still signs of its age in the smaller plants like dog's mercury, wood sorrel, ramsons, bluebells, honeysuckle, primrose, and foxgloves and white admiral butterflies have been seen. The wood consists of larch and spruce, and mixed broadleaf including silver birch, ash, lots of hazel, holly and some lovely oaks. The north-east boundary faces a pretty meadow. Roe and muntjac deer pay frequent visits amd there is extensive bird life. Good dormouse territory. The woodland lends itself to quiet seclusion, a great place to camp and hide away. Although easily accessible, you can really feel that you are miles from anywhere. Cerne Abbas village and Giant are only a few minutes drive south and the Dorset coast a mere 20 miles.
The purchasers of the woodland will be asked to enter into a covenant to ensure the quiet and peaceful enjoyment of adjoining woodlands and meadows.
Boundaries: Boundaries of Buckbury Wood are indicated with orange markings.

Please take a map of the wood with you. From Sherborne take the A352 south towards Dorchester. After about 5 miles you will pass through the hamlet of Middlemarsh and, after a double bend, you will see two entrances to woodland on your right. Park alongside the first entrance with the double wooden gate. Walk about 400 metres down the forest track (if you bought the wood you would be able to drive down). Buckbury Wood is then on your right marked in orange. From Dorchester, take the A352 North towards Sherborne and the gates are on your left after the hamlet of Lyon's Gate
