Dollery Wood is a quiet, away-from-it-all kind of place and, although easily accessible, you can really feel that you are miles from anywhere. Like some of its neighbours it is named after a character in the Thomas Hardy novel "The Woodlanders" which was reputedly set in this area of Dorset. At one time in it's long and distant past it would have been part of the Royal Forest of Blackmore dating from the 11th and 12th centuries. Today the wood we see is much more recent, being mainly a Norway spruce with some ash, hazel, oak and thuja. There are still signs of its ancient past in the smaller plants known as indicator species, like bluebells, dog's mercury, ramsons and wood sorrel along with an extensive array of fungi which should keep your average mycologist very busy. Many types of fern and luxuriant carpets of sphagnum moss add to the greenery. the white admiral butterfly has been spotted, roe and sika deer are often seen and there are many types of bird living in the wood. Cerne Abbas village and Giant are only a few minutes drive south and the Dorset coast a mere 20 miles.
The purchasers of the woodland will be asked to enter into a covenant to ensure the quiet and peaceful enjoyment of adjoining woodlands and meadows.
Boundaries: Boundaries of Dollery Wood are indicated with pale terracotta markings.

Please take a map of the wood with you. From Sherborne take the A352 South towards Dorchester. After about 5 miles you will pass through the hamlet of Middlemarsh and a house called Thorn Knapp will be on your right-hand side. Just past the house you will see an entrance to the woodland with a double wooden 5-bar gate also on your right. Park alongside this entrance. Over the gate, walk about 400 metres down the forest track (if you purchase the wood you will be able to drive down) and turn left. Dollery Wood is then a further 70 metres on your right marked in pale terracotta. From Dorchester, take the A352 North towards Sherborne and the gates are on your left after the hamlet of Lyon's Gate. Look out for the "Woodlands for Sale" signboard.
