Hawthorne Wood - SOLD, Somerset - About 7 ¼ acres, £49,000

Hawthorne Wood - SOLD

Hawthorne Wood is at the end of a well-maintained woodland track built by the Napoleonic prisoners of war at the beginning of the nineteenth century.  There are no roads running immediately next to the wood just miles of rich farmland and stunning unbroken views stretching away into the distance.

The level wooded area at the entrance provides an ideal parking and camping area before giving way to more open ground as the track descends the hillside before once again returning to an area of dense broadleaf woodland with some grand oak and beech specimens.

The diversity of Hawthorne Wood provides habitat for many different plant types from the flowering gorse of the open areas to the fragile woodland flowers that thrive in the shady glades of the beech wood.

Hawthorne Wood provides the ideal opportunity for replanting of native species on open ground and regeneration of the existing established wooded areas.

From Hawthorne Wood The Wellington Monument can be seen standing proud at 175 feet tall on the highest point of the Blackdown Hills. It was built in honour of Sir Arthur Wellesley, the first Duke of Wellington, to commemorate his victory at Waterloo.

During the Napoleonic Wars (1799 -1815), over 100,000 French prisoners of war were held captive in Britain. Unlike eighteenth-century prisoners of war, prisoners of the Napoleonic Wars remained captive for the duration of the conflict and were widely put to task to provide cheap labour for construction projects such as the access track to Hawthorne Wood that still survives today.

Nearby Wellington is a small country town standing between the River Tone and the beautiful Blackdown Hills that has a range of local services for the woodland visitor.

The purchasers of the woodland will be asked to enter into a covenant to ensure the quiet and peaceful enjoyment of adjoining woodlands and meadows.
