An amazing array of woodland habitats awaits exploration at Lyme Wood. Coniferous plantation from the 1950s merges into mature deciduous tree stock and a thick under-canopy of flowering shrubs. Predominantly well drained level ground gives way to smaller areas of softer ground around a small woodland brook which passes through Lyme Wood, where wetland grasses create great diversity for the local wildlife and woodland flora.
Lyme wood has independent secure gated access from a quiet country lane to a cleared parking area. In the Spring the visitor here is greeted with a truly stunning display of bluebells carpeting the woodland floor. Numerous hidden clearings deep within Lyme Wood provide the perfect haven for a rare retreat without interruption from the modern world.
The sleepy local area gives no clue of an interesting past except for the intact remains of one of the concrete bunkers or 'dragons teeth' that can be seen near the entrance of Lyme Wood. This is one of a series of such positions built to create a defencive barrier during the second world war from Seaton on the nearby south coast to the Severn estuary at Burnham, to isolate the south west peninsula in the event of German invasion.
Lyme Wood is bordered by private woodland and open farmland. The wider surrounding area is characterised by quiet country lanes and small villages in an overwhelmingly rural local area where the hills shelve gently down to the south coast a short drive away. The market towns of Chard, Axminster and Crewkerne provide everyday services for the woodland owner.
The purchasers of the woodland will be asked to enter into a covenant to ensure the quiet and peaceful enjoyment of adjoining woodlands and meadows.
