Wellington Wood slopes gently from the Blackdown Hills into the Vale of Taunton and has a sunny aspect facing westward towards the Brenden Hills, Exmoor and the Somerset coast. From clearings within the wood a stunning panorama opens out across the valley making this a truly uplifting place.
At the entrance to the wood from the highway there is a generous, level parking area which in turn leads directly into Wellington Wood.
The wood is bisected by numerous animal tracks and has a number of interesting gully formations that pass along the valley side. Enormous beech trees and ancient banks stand guard at the boundary of the wood and within there is an interesting mix of birch and mountain ash along with the incongruous pinkie white spring blossom of the crab apple. The under canopy includes flowering gorse and holly. On the ground layer the keener eyed will spot the small purple berries of the bilberry bush.
A short walk from Wellington Wood The Wellington Monument can be seen standing proud at 175 feet tall on the highest point of the Blackdown Hills. It was built in honour of Sir Arthur Wellesley, the first Duke of Wellington, to commemorate his victory at Waterloo.
During the Napoleonic Wars (1799 -1815), over 100,000 French prisoners of war were held captive in Britain. Unlike eighteenth-century prisoners of war, prisoners of the Napoleonic Wars remained captive for the duration of the conflict and were widely put to task to provide cheap labour for construction projects such as the access track to Wellington Wood that still survives today.
Nearby, Wellington is a small country town standing between the River Tone and the Blackdown Hills that has a range of local services for the woodland visitor.
The purchasers of the woodland will be asked to enter into a covenant to ensure the quiet and peaceful enjoyment of adjoining woodlands and meadows.
