Initially the character of the woodland is defined by the mature areas of Western Hemlock that surround the entrance. Wander further into the interior and the area of conifer gives way to broadleaf specimens including some fine beech and ash and the occasional oak.
Yeoman Wood is accessed from a quiet country lane into a small self-contained private parking area that, although not within the wood boundary itself, provides secure access and a right of way into the wood.
It is refreshing and somewhat unusual to find an area of woodland where nature has been left largely unchecked in the recent past, creating a wild area of flowering rhododendron amongst the towering trees. For the family camper this provides both seclusion and an abundance of wildlife to view and the ideal opportunity to create further hidden glades and connecting paths within the woodland.
Near the entrance to the woodland you will see the intact remains of one of the concrete bunkers or 'dragons teeth' . This is one of a series of such positions built to create a defencive barrier during the second world war from Seaton on the south coast to the Severn estuary at Burnham, to isolate the south-west peninsula in the event of German invasion.
At the present time there is some activity here to upgrade the access track to the woods and carry out a replanting scheme of mainly indigenous hardwood species to replace recently felled conifer and areas where rhododendron has been cleared. This we believe will greatly enhance this woodland for future owners in the long term. Care should be taken when visiting this woodland due to the contracting works, for further information please contact our local manager Dan Sharp.
Yeoman Wood is bordered by private woodland. The wider surrounding area is characterised by quiet country lanes and small villages in an overwhelmingly rural local area where the hills shelve gently down to the south coast a short drive away. The market towns of Chard, Axminster and Crewkerne provide everyday services for the woodland owner.
