Birchcleave Wood is a small but attractive wood, being part of woodlands covering much of the surrounding area. The larger trees are mainly beech with some oak, ash and sycamore. The understorey is a mix of birch, hazel, hawthorn and holly, with a particularly nice stand of birch on the river bank. The river Walkham is well known locally for its fishing (salmon and migratory trout). Birchleave Wood has about 70 yards of river frontage. The wood is located between Tavistock (www.tavistock-devon.co.uk) and Horrabridge (www.horrabridge.org).
Although being quite small in size at a little over 1 acre, the wood has much to offer, with good access within the wood from a private track running east-west across it. It is easy to reach and despite its proximity to the road it is very tranquil, particularly alongside the river. Birdlife is varied and roe deer are seen regularly within the wood.
The purchasers of the woodland will be asked to enter into a covenant to ensure the quiet and peaceful enjoyment of adjoining woodlands and meadows.
Boundaries: The southern boundary is the river Walkham. The northern boundary is a stone wall alongside the road. The western boundary is chain-link fencing. The eastern boundary is a combination of chain-link fencing and marker posts. All boundaries are marked with orange paint on posts and trees.
This wood is no longer available. For more woods in the area, please see the regional page or contact our regional manager.

From Tavistock take the A386 towards Plymouth. After leaving Tavistock and passing the Whitchurch turning you will reach the Halfway House Inn at Grenofen (http://www.thehalfwayhouseinn.com). From here it is 3/4 mile to the wood, which is on the righthand side of the road. However, the turning into the wood is quite acute, so it is advisable to continue down the road for another half mile to Bedford Bridge. Cross over the bridge and turn right, into the public car park. Turn around here and go back over the bridge and up the road, approaching with the wood on your left. Park in front of the gate. There is a 'Woodlands for Sale' board beside the gate. Go over the gate and walk about 60 yards down the track, where you will see orange markings on posts indicating the start of Birchcleave Wood. The track continues to the western boundary of the wood, again marked in orange.
