Fishleigh Wood is surrounded by areas of private woodland and farmland.
There is a pretty stream running the length of the western boundary. Although the stream slows to a trickle during dry periods, there are numerous pools and channels where the banks have been undercut and the stream supports a variery of creatures including brown trout and even crayfish.
All along the streamside is a belt of mature woodland comprising mostly oaks, ash and alder, with an understory of hazel and holly.
Between the shady wooded streamside area and the newer planting, there is an area of level grassland, accessed via a gate from one of the grass rides which wind through the woodland. This grassy area, being level, secluded and close to a water-source (ie the stream) would make the perfect spot for camping or even caravanning - the grass rides are wide enough for a smallish touring caravan.
The new planting (9 - 10 years old) which makes up the majority of the wood comprises mainly native broadleaved species such as oak, ash, alder and cherry. This area was planted under the woodland grant scheme and there is a period of about 5 years of the scheme left to run, providing a modest income to help with the management of the woodland.
Long-established hedgebanks and secure stock/deer fencing define the boundaries to this woodland with its varied habitats.
The woodland is approached along a gated, stoned track which leads to a shared parking & turning area near the entrance to the wood.
This is a very quiet spot in an unspoilt part of rural Devon. The nearest market towns are Hatherleigh and Holsworthy, whilst the village of Highampton with its village store and pub is only about a 10 minute walk from the wood.
The purchasers of the woodland will be asked to enter into a covenant to ensure the quiet and peaceful enjoyment of adjoining woodlands and meadows.
