Located near the village of Kilkhampton and within easy reach of the North Cornwall coast, Forda Wood is made up of two distinct parts. The top half of the woodland which slopes gently down from its southern boundary comprises mixed broadleaves including oak, ash, rowan, poplar, alder and willow. A broad grass ride runs east – west near to the southern boundary which is a mature and sturdy hedge. Smaller grass tracks run along the western boundary and from near the entrance gate down to the steps which allow access over the dividing hedge bank described below. A further track runs through this upper section from near the south-east corner towards the north-west. A mature hedge-bank runs east to west across the wood, separating the top section from the lower. Steps up and over the hedge bank provide access to the lower area. Just by the steps, near a stand of alders, there is a very secluded corner of the wood, a lovely spot for picnics or camping. There is a similar area on the other side of the hedge bank too – although the trees here are poplars rather than alders.
Take the steps over the hedge-bank and you find yourself in an area of meadow grasses and wildflowers with poplars and hazel. The very bottom part of this area, which has a small stream running along the northern boundary, has a wetland feel to it, with tussock grasses and willows. A track crosses this lower section, running from about half-way up the eastern boundary across to the south-west corner. The lower area of Forda Wood is more open than the upper section, which is more closely stocked with trees.
The woodlands were established about 12 years ago and there is a modest income available under the woodland grant scheme for another 3 – 4 years.
The purchasers of the woodland will be asked to enter into a covenant to ensure the quiet and peaceful enjoyment of adjoining woodlands and meadows.
