The newer portion of this lovely mixed wood was planted around 10 years ago on land previously grazed by a small dairy herd of Jersey cows. The grazing land had itself been reclaimed from moorland, part of an area known as Graddon Moor.
When creating the woodland much emphasis was placed on conservation and habitat improvement. Mixed broadleaves make up the bulk of the planting, including oak, wild cherry, whitebeam and poplar, whilst the borders of the rides are populated with flowering and fruiting species including hawthorn, guelder rose, crab apple, holly and alder buckthorn.
Grass tracks and rides make navigation within the wood easy and there are broader grassy areas near the northern boundary and to the eastern side.
The north-east corner of the wood is an area of about half an acre of mature trees; mainly oaks with some beech and an under-storey of hazel and holly. A stream borders this piece of the wood along its eastern boundary.
The wood is rich in wildlife. As well as the many songbirds there are birds of prey including barn owls and kestrels. Four-legged visitors include red and roe deer, badgers, foxes and rabbits, whilst the flowering and fruiting trees and shrubs attract many butterflies, bees and other insect species.
The purchasers of the woodland will be asked to enter into a covenant to ensure the quiet and peaceful enjoyment of adjoining woodlands and meadows.
