Haines Wood is mainly ancient semi-natural woodland but it also has its own small area of meadow. The wood is in a very peaceful and scenic location, being bordered by National Trust land and private woodland. The meadow is on high, well-drained and reasonably flat land, making it the ideal spot for camping and picnics. The wood is part of the River Lemon Valley Woods - a designated Site of Special Scientific Interest. This SSSI area is an example of ancient semi-natural woodland developed almost wholly on limestone and calcareous soils, a habitat rare in Devon. The main canopy trees are ash, pendunculate oak and beech, with small-leaved lime, field maple and sycamore also present. The shrub layer is very varied and includes hazel, wild service tree, spindle, wayfaring tree, guelder rose, dogwood and crab apple. The ground flora is equally rich with butcher's broom and spurge laurel being among the most notable species. The woodland slopes down towards the River Lemon.
The purchasers of the woodland will be asked to enter into a covenant to ensure the quiet and peaceful enjoyment of adjoining woodlands and meadows.

From Newton Abbot (http://www.devonlink.co.uk/newtonabbot/newton-abbot.php) take the A381 Totnes Road. Turn right at the first roundabout (Ogwell Cross). From here it is just under 2 miles to the wood. After approx. 1 mile turn right at the Village Green. Follow the road down into the village and turn right by the village hall. After about 50 yards, just as the road bends sharply left and downhill, turn right into Mill Lane (no through road). Follow this road and park by the gate on your right. There is a Woodlands sign on the gate. Go over the gate and follow the stock fence up the left-hand side of the meadow for about 250 yards to the gate bearing a sign for 'Haines Wood'.
