Leat Wood is part of the River Lemon Valley Woods, an extensive area of ancient semi-natural woodland and a designated Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI).
Although just a few minutes drive from Newton Abbot, the wood is in a very quiet and unspoilt setting, being surrounded by National Trust land and areas of private woodland.
The wood slopes down towards the River Lemon, whilst the southern edge is fringed with a small area of meadow which is on high, well-drained and flat land. In other words, the perfect place for camping and picnics. Entering the woodland from the grassy area, through a gap cut in the trees, a track leads off to the left and winds gently down towards the south-west corner of the woodland. Other tracks - mainly created by animals - criss-cross the wood and make it easy to traverse.
Looking out from the private entrance gate to the woodland, there are lovely views across the adjoining organic meadow, with the Teign estuary to the east and surrounding countryside to the south-west.
Just inside the wood's edge are some old stone workings, providing a very sheltered spot. Being mainly beechwood, there are many varieties of fungus to be found in the wood. Other species include ash, oak, sycamore, hazel, holly and yew. Woodland plants include butcher's broom and spurge laurel, wild garlic, bluebells and early purple orchids.
The purchasers of the woodland will be asked to enter into a covenant to ensure the quiet and peaceful enjoyment of adjoining woodlands and meadows.

Boundaries:
The boundaries are indicated by green markings on posts and trees.
The southern boundary comprises stock fencing with the woodland's private access gate. The stock fencing extends part of the way along the eastern and western boundaries, to the point where the fence meets the wood. The northern boundary is mainly a stone wall with some post and wire fencing. There is a public footpath running east to west across the wood, following the line of the northern boundary.
This wood is no longer available. For more woods in the area, please see the regional page or contact our regional manager.

From Newton Abbot:-
Take the A381 Totnes Road. Turn right at the first roundabout (Ogwell Cross). From here it is just under 2 miles to the wood. After approx. 1 mile turn right at the Village Green. Follow the road down into the village and turn right by the village hall and a property called 'the old bakery'. After about 50 yards, just as the road bends sharply left and downhill, turn right into Mill Lane (no through road). Follow this single-track road and park by the gate on your right, which is immediately before the entrance to a water treatment plant. There is a Woodlands For Sale sign beside the gate. Go over the gate, up the stoned track and over the gate into Ogwell Meadow. Follow the stock fence up the left-hand side of the meadow for about 200 yards to the gate bearing a sign for 'Leat Wood' and a 'for sale' board.
