You are here: Home > Buying a Wood > Cornwall and West Devon > Taddiport Wood
The core of Taddiport Wood is a long-established conifer plantation, but around it there are many mature broadleaved trees, principally oak, beech and sycamore. Being set on the side of the Torridge valley, the wood slopes east to west with some parts being only gentle gradients and elsewhere rather less gentle. But take the zig-zag track which winds its way up through the wood towards the western side, and you will be rewarded with fine views back across the valley and, with open fields behind, this is a lovely part of the wood for relaxing in.
Deer tracks criss-cross the wood and active badger setts are in evidence, particularly in the hedge-bank along the western boundary . Tawny owls can be heard, if seldom seen even during the daytime and there are at least two buzzards' nests in the tree-tops.
Elsewhere are reminders of the woodland's long-term ownership (4 generations) by a local farming family. An old quarry, from which stone was extracted for repairs to farm buildings and tracks, can be found towards the southern end of the wood whilst at the top is what remains of an "ark" from the days when the farmers pigs wandered in the wood foraging for acorns.
Close by is the market town of Great Torrington (http://www.great-torrington.com/) and if you want a change from eating in the wood, the restaurant at nearby RHS Rosemoor is highly recommended (http://www.rhs.org.uk/WhatsOn/gardens/rosemoor/index.asp).
The purchasers of the woodland will be asked to enter into a covenant to ensure the quiet and peaceful enjoyment of adjoining woodlands and meadows.
