Thorne Wood really does have a little bit of everything. Mixed broadleaves, a wetland area which includes two wildlife ponds, mature hedge-banks and the shell of an old cattle shelter. Access to the best of what the region has to offer is very easy, but there is so much within the wood itself that you may find it hard to make the time to go farther afield. The southern half of Thorne Wood comprises mixed broadleaf planting including sessile oak, ash, poplar, wild cherry, rowan and field maple. A track runs down inside the western boundary hedge and about half way down a hedge-bank runs East to West across the wood. The shell of an old cattle shelter can be found here, on the West side. This could form the basis for a tool store or a hide from which to enjoy the varied bird and animal life which frequents the area around the ponds. The larger of the two ponds teems with small rudd - very attractive to heron and kingfisher alike. Otter spraints (droppings) have been found in the area. The smaller pond is fringed with bullrushes and is surrounded by boggy ground, meaning that the pond could, if desired, be easily extended. This wetland area is largely unplanted, except for a few willows. Roe deer are very regular visitors to this part of the wood. Thorne Wood is a very special place indeed.
The woodlands were established about 10 years ago and there is a modest income available under the woodland grant scheme for another 5 – 6 years
Note: in accordance with the terms under which the woodland was established, public access to the woods was granted for a ten year period, which expires in January 2009.
The purchasers of the woodland will be asked to enter into a covenant to ensure the quiet and peaceful enjoyment of adjoining woodlands and meadows.
Boundaries:
The western and northern boundaries are mature hedge-banks. A small stream runs along the northern boundary. The eastern boundary is a line of stakes painted green. The southern boundary is the Northern edge of the access track which runs East to West across the wood, just inside the southern hedge-bank.
All boundaries are marked with green paint on posts and trees.
