Thurdon Wood, Cornwall - Nearly 3 ½ acres, £35,000

Thurdon Wood

Taking its name from a nearby hamlet and farmstead, Thurdon Wood is part of a larger area of privately owned woodlands just outside the lively north Cornwall village of Kilkhampton.

The woodland is set on level ground, only sloping very gently down as you reach its northern edge. Broad tracks run along the eastern and western boundaries and across the woodland from west to east near to the southern boundary where a stoned parking and turning area is located close to the entrance gate.

Along the woodland edges the spruce trees which make up the bulk of the planting have been high-pruned, with all of the lower branches being removed. This, together with a little selective felling, has opened up areas of the forest floor, allowing light through so that ground flora can become established. Further selective thinning of the approximately 18 year-old conifers, followed by the planting of other tree species would greatly enhance the diversity of the woodland.

Songbirds (often easier to hear than see) are ever-present among the higher branches and roe deer regularly pass through the woodland; the places where they cross the boundary banks are easily identified.

A clearing in the heart of the woodland provides the ideal spot to establish base-camp and to sit by a warming fire after a hard days work in the woods, whilst in severe cases requiring greater restorative comfort, a visit to nearby Kilkhampton's Gillet's Chippy, to sample their legendary 'lunchtime special' is an experience not to be missed!

Whilst rapidly maturing, Thurdon Wood is still young enough to allow you to shape and nurture it to suit your own preferences.
