Around 10 years ago the previous owners of this farmland, itself reclaimed from moorland, decided to give up dairy farming and convert the land into woodland with particular emphasis on wildlife and landscape improvement.
A lot of thought and care went into the layout of the wood, with its tracks and rides, mixed planting and wildlife friendly features such as raptor posts along the margins of the rides. Tree species were chosen for their attractiveness to birds, bees and butterflies in particular. So alongside the mixed broadleaves there are woody shrubs and smaller trees such as alder buckthorn and hawthorn which attract many varieties of butterfly. The broadleaved varieties include field maple, oak, alder, and wild cherry.
The wood is enclosed on all four sides by high mature hedgerows made up of mixed species such as blackthorn, sycamore and hawthorn. As well as rabbits, squirrels and small mammals, foxes and badgers frequent the wood as do both red and roe deer.
Unusually for a wood of this size, there is quite a large area of open grassland within it, which could be used for a multitude of purposes. A wildlife pond could be created or a wildflower glade, or maybe a vegetable area or small orchard. It could also be the site for practical activites like hurdle making - willow and hazel are both present, bee-keeping, or even charcoal burning - the management plan for the wood recommends coppicing of the alder at the thinning stage. Or, if this all sounds like too much hard work, then you could simply pitch a tent and sit back and enjoy the glorious surroundings!
The purchasers of the woodland will be asked to enter into a covenant to ensure the quiet and peaceful enjoyment of adjoining woodlands and meadows.
