There is more to Woolcombe Wood than just the young plantation of sitka spruce which occupies much of this woodland.
From the entrance gate a grass track runs the length of the eastern boundary to a high point at the north-east corner, where four large oaks stand in a grassy clearing; an ideal spot for camping. Follow the track along the northern boundary and just before you come to a solitary oak, you will see a line of posts running down through the conifers. This line of posts denotes the western boundary. Walking down the western boundary line, you will cross two wide grassy rides, both of which lead back to the eastern side of the wood.
This walk through the conifers also gives a good indication of how the woodland will develop once a first thinning has been carried out.
A wide area of grassland sits between the southern edge of the conifers and a tree-lined stream which forms the southern boundary.
The whole wood is surrounded by farmland and woodland and there are lovely views out across the surrounding countryside from high points along the tracks.
Birdsong is just about the only thing you will hear within the wood; brightly coloured bullfinches and many other species of small bird seem to like the shelter provided by the dense trees, which also offer cover from the eyes of predators like sparrowhawks which can often be seen overhead.
Although only about ten years old, the spruce trees are thriving on what was previously farmland. The woodland was planted under a Woodland Grant Scheme and there is a small grant income payable for the next few years.
The network of wide tracks through and around the wood will simplify any future woodland management activity such as thinning the spruce or, for example, clearing areas and replanting with other species.
The purchasers of the woodland will be asked to enter into a covenant to ensure the quiet and peaceful enjoyment of adjoining woodlands and meadows.
