Arriving at Coach Wood one can’t fail to notice the influence of the railway upon the area. As the name suggests, the wood has its roots in railway history, the disused track which runs along the north-eastern boundary finally closed in 1953.
Triangular in shape with a flat central area, gently sloping banks lead up to the woodland. The south facing slope is light and airy and has extremely large fir trees amongst the birch, sweet chestnut, ash and rowan. The understory is splashed with vibrant yellow from gorse and broom bushes flowering in early summer, punctuated by fox gloves standing vertically. The purple flowers of bugle and the carrot-like leaves of pignut with their sprays of white flowers add to the diverse flora attracting butterflies and many other insects.
The flat area, which probably accounts for at least half the total size of Coach Wood, has had some felling work during recent years, many of the broadleaved trees were left and are producing seed with some germinating below. Planting of young trees has also taken place with sweet chestnut, oak and sycamore now growing, protected in tree tubes. Wild raspberries grow throughout this area providing the forager with some fruit gathering opportunities.
There are many ferns and other shade tolerant plants on the embankment including bluebells and wood sorrel. A patch of gooseberries has also naturalised here, perhaps descending from a seed cast out of a passing train 60 or 70 years ago. Higher up the sides of the embankment large and mature sycamore and ash shade the area and are mixed with smaller elm, hornbeam and hawthorn.
Access is along the track running along the southern boundary which leads to the ride stop entrance and a parking and turning area. Close to this, a bench in the dappled sunlight is the ideal place to sit and watch the resident bird life and enjoy the tranquillity of the surroundings.
Brampton Station is within easy walking distance making this the perfect woodland to access by train.
The purchasers of the woodland will be asked to enter into a covenant to ensure the quiet and peaceful enjoyment of adjoining woodlands and meadows.
