Sheltering just under the lea of Barrow and Canny Hills, Tottle Wood looks down on Lake Windermere in the distance and the fells rising up either side from the shore line. The previous spruce trees were felled some years ago, and their stumps can still be seen giving home to lichens and mosses with small plants including bilberry and heathers rooting in the rotting wood. Invertebrates burrow deep inside and are food for small mammals and birds.
Nature has taken over and produced a young birch woodland by natural regeneration from seeds lying dormant in the soil. The resulting mosaic of birch, mountain ash, alder with open areas of heather and bilberry and exposed rocky outcrops provides plenty to discover: as the years pass the woodland will change and grow. This stage of growth is particularly liked by birds, flitting from branch to branch while overhead buzzards are seen, and occasionally a red kite will glide past (which were successfully released some years ago at nearby Grizedale). A keen-eyed viewer should be able to catch a glimpse of red or roe deer as they browse on the birch and holly.
The rocky outcrop which forms the highest point within the wood is the best place to see the excellent wide ranging views over to Lake Windermere and beyond to other areas in the South Lakes.
From the woodland entrance a track leads into private parking/camping area, which is perfect for campfires. To keep the woodland purely broadleaved and natural the conifer regrowth was recently felled, these cuttings are now dry and ideal for a campfire - the branches for kindling and the stems for the wood.
Access: Is via Hazelrigg Lane. There is a communal hard standing area for parking just inside the shared entrance gate. From the left side follow the track up (right & left turns, right again, up then past a left turn then down over a small ford, up along double bend) then Tottle Wood is on the right with the entrance a little further on. This is a fair trek and climbs steeply in places.
TheArea: With Lakeland fells to the north and Morcambe Bay to the south, Tottle Wood is perfectly located for exploring the Lake District National Park. Whether sightseeing in a vehicle or taking to the fells on foot the list of things to do is almost endless. Windermere cruises run from Bowness, Ambleside and Lakeside which are all close at hand. There is plenty of B+B in the local area.
The purchasers of the woodland will be asked to enter into a covenant to ensure the quiet and peaceful enjoyment of adjoining woodlands and meadows.
