Church Hill Wood is a must -view woodland with many attractions for the small woodland purchaser. For example it has a wonderful mix of broadleaf and mature conifer trees. The broadleaved trees include oak, birch, beech and hazel. There are some fine examples of mature specimens within the wood. A well-thinned area with self-generating birch can be found to the north of the woodland. Conifers include mature spruce which could provide a good source of timber for a number of forestry projects.
This varied woodland provides ample opportunity for flora and fauna to set up home. The stream provides a water source for resident mammals such as red and roe deer and a family of badgers that use the woodland to dig for earthworms and beetles. The watercourse alongside grassy tracks is excellent habitat for frogs and these can be spotted hopping out of the way as you stroll by the stream. The biodiversity continues with many different species of plant helped by the good thinning out trees which has been done which allows light to penetrate the woodland canopy and warm the ground. Bluebells can be found in the spring as can wood sorrel, wooded nightshade and a number of ferns.
Church Hill Wood is well placed with many services nearby and is a great spot to explore mid-Devon and the stunning north Devon coast. You can be a really eco-friendly woodland owner and arrive at your woodland by train as there is a station within a 10 minute walk! Portsmouth Arms station is part of the Tarka line which is famous for being one of the most beautiful train lines in the country. It also links directly to Exeter stations. Even better is the fact that at the bottom of the main entrance up to Church Hill Wood is the Portsmouth Arms Inn, handily sited to replenish yourself after a good day enjoying your woodland.
If you fancy a treat as an alternative to camping, perhaps during colder weather, when visiting your wood there is the stunning Northcote Manor within a 5 minute walk. You can also eat here in the evenings. There is an excellent sawmill within a mile of the wood which could be useful for your woodland projects and a chainsaw shop at nearby Umberleigh.
Church Hill Wood is situated about 8 miles south from the busy town of Barnstaple which provides many shops and services and is the gateway to explore the rugged coast of north Devon and many beautiful beaches such as Westward Ho! and the surfing beaches of Croyde and Woolacombe. The City of Exeter is approximately 20 miles south and has many shops, the league one football team Exeter City and much history including an amazing cathedral and remains of the roman city wall.

Travelling from Exeter, follow the A377 Barnstaple road through Crediton. Continue on to the village of Eggesford and after around 5 miles you will enter the village of Portsmouth Arms. The entrance to the wood is opposite the Portsmouth Arms Inn via the tarmac drive shared with Northcote Manor Hotel.
Follow the tarmac drive up the hill until the second entrance gate on your left into the woodland - you will see a small 'woodlands for sale' sign on the gate. Park outside this gate, leaving the tarmac drive clear and climb carefully over this gate onto the access track. Follow this track down for about 40 metres until you see a ride stop on your right with a 'Church Hill Wood' name sign on it. This is the entrance to the wood.
From the Barnstaple direction, follow the A377 south towards Crediton. Pass the turn to Umberleigh and continue into the village of Portsmouth Arms. Turn right opposite the Portsmouth Arms Inn into the tarmac drive which leads to Northcote Manor. You will see a sign for the hotel and restaurant at this entrance. Then follow the directions to Church Hill Wood as above.
Church Hill Wood is also conveniently positioned opposite Portsmouth Arms railway station, part of the 'Tarka line' that runs between Barnstaple and Exeter.
