Embury Wood, Devon - About 7 acres, £45,000

Embury Wood

Embury Wood is made up of mixed conifers, predominantly spruce, and occasional willow. The woodland is suitable for many purposes - a place to set up a camp, being ideally located to explore the coast line; a place to enjoy small scale forestry with your family in a tranquil setting or simply to enjoy as a retreat or just for observing wildlife. The level topography of both the track and Embury Wood is ideal for any extraction of timber the owner may wish to do.

Embury Wood has a good internal drainage system channelling the water throughout giving a usable water resource. There are small clearings within the wood in which the sun has begun to encourage the growth and spread of various ground flora. Areas of willow thrive in these places while the more shaded parts of the wood give excellent habitat for ferns and mosses.

When spending time in the wood you may be lucky enough to hear the tawny owls or perhaps have a sighting of one of the magnificent red deer that travel through. Indeed when you visit the wood you can look for their tracks and fewmets (deer droppings) along the entrance track. Other species that have left signs in the wood are the fox and the roe deer. Snipe have been seen overwintering in the area and this part of Devon is one of the best for seeing the amazing flocks of starlings. There are also small birds to be found at the woodland edge due to good hedgerows along the outer boundary of the entrance track. At the main entrance some goldcrests have been observed feeding. The far end of the wood has a long clearing with potential to create a pond area. Indeed during the spring and summer frogs jump out of your way as you walk along here!

The local area around Embury Wood is superb for touring and holidaying with the stunning north Devon coast within about 4 miles of the wood. The nearby village of Hartland has good facilities such as shops and pubs. The village is a good point to access the south west coast path with amazing geology and views of the sea lining the way. The Island of Lundy can be seen on a clear day and a trip to see this Marine Nature Reserve can be made from the nearby town of Ilfracombe.

Another picturesque coastal place a short drive away is the historic fishing village of Clovelly. The towns of Bude and Barnstaple are within easy reach providing an excellent range of shops, cafes, cinemas and things to do and see. You can access the Tarka trail from Barnstaple, a beautiful 22-mile cycle on an old railway line which is pretty flat!  The Tarka railway line runs from Barnstaple giving good links to Exeter and mainline routes. You can access Barnstaple on the A361, which links directly to the M5.

The purchasers of the woodland will be asked to enter into a covenant to ensure the quiet and peaceful enjoyment of adjoining woodlands and meadows.

You will see a gate in front of you. Go over the gate and take the track to the left, following this all the way to a hedge bank, where you turn right and continue along the track adjacent to the hedge bank.
