Heltor Wood is in a sheltered location on the eastern side of Dartmoor National Park. Surrounded by the stunning countryside of Dartmoor this is a perfect location for family forestry, camping and touring this beautiful part of Devon. The woodland is easily accessed from a council-maintained road and the level topography gives excellent internal access.
Heltor Wood has three distinct and varied areas. The main area of the wood is a well managed mature conifer area providing some good sized timber and is easy to walk through. Here there are a few young mountain ash, hazel and beech mixed in. There is another area of young, dense spruce trees that are great for deer (and children!) to explore and find secret areas including the magical clearing seen in the photos. Finally at the northern western end of the woodland you will discover a lovely young mixed broadleaved woodland. This part of Heltor Wood is made up of beech, oak, ash and birch. Along the north-eastern boundary is a well established hazel hedge which has been coppiced in the past. From this boundary are views of Dartmoor and within the wood you have excellent views of Blackingstone Rock. Within the broadleaf woodland area mixed ground flora provides colour throughout the seasons. Whilst exploring you may see deer tracks or if you’re lucky flush out a resident woodcock, which will probably make you jump!
Heltor Wood lies near the small hamlet of Westcott, and is near the village of Bridford. The moorland town of Mortenhampstead lies only 4 miles away. Moretonhampstead has plenty of shops, a school, and numerous pubs!
A network of walking and cycle routes within Dartmoor are nearby. It is only a 20-minute drive to Exeter for supplies as well as links to the M5, Exeter airport and via the A30 at Whiddon Down to Cornwall.
Nearby is the local feature of Blackingstone Rock which is a great viewing point offering 360° views of the surrounding moorland. On the summit there are water-filled rock basins which can be reached by climbing the iron ladder. Blackingstone Rock is a typical example of Dartmoor granite found in this region.
The purchasers of the woodland will be asked to enter into a covenant to ensure the quiet and peaceful enjoyment of adjoining woodlands and meadows.
