Lew Wood is set in the heart of a beautiful area of Devon near to the village of Ashbury. This fine woodland has formed an integral part of the history of the area of Ashbury and part of the old estate of Ashbury Manor.
An attractive focal point is the main entrance that takes you up to Lew Wood. Through the front gate you pass a pair of old stone gate posts and a stone bridge with a build date of 1830 marked on a stone above the arch. These features have been recently re-discovered and formed part of the original entrance to Ashbury Manor.
Lew Wood can be approached via two tracks. The upper track to the left takes you past a Ha-Ha wall on your left hand side. Reaching the end of this wall you enter a meadow and looking up the hill to the left you will see the historic St Mary's Church.
The lower track on your right takes you through an attractive area of private woodland. The Lew Wood boundary is marked by a ride stop.
Lew Wood slopes down from its western boundary to the river Lew, the centre of which forms its eastern boundary. Here it is simply an idyllic spot with wild flowers, the cool shade of green leaves and the blissful sound of running water, a perfect place for camping, picnics or lying on a blanket reading your favourite book. Whilst by the river close your eyes and enjoy the sound of the birdsong and the sound of the river as it flows over the rocks, a great place to unwind and forget modern day life.
Lew Wood has a stunning mixture of mature ash, oak and beech trees with a good variety of ground flora. This woodland is ideal for those who wish to encourage biodiversity and conservation or engage in small forestry projects. If you are quiet you may be lucky and see one of the roe deer that frequent the woodland. Other possible sightings are great spotted woodpeckers, falcons, a wily fox hunting for lunch, or one of the local badgers.
Lew Wood is a beautiful wood all year round but is simply glorious in the spring with an outstanding display of bluebells as seen in some of the photographs. The presence of bluebells indicates that Lew Wood is a long established and is most probably ancient.
Near Ashbury you will find a well-known golf course and a few miles away the town of Okehampton which has an excellent range of shops, cafes, pubs and takeaways. If you are looking for a place to lunch or stay when at the wood, the local Highwayman Inn is an unusual treat
The purchasers of the woodland will be asked to enter into a covenant to ensure the quiet and peaceful enjoyment of adjoining woodlands and meadows.
