The wood is set in "Doone Country" - the setting for the famous story 'Lorna Doone' by R. D. Blackmore, so an excellent place to sit in a quiet spot and imagine you are back in this era! The church at nearby Oare is where Lorna was shot on her wedding day.

Directions

Travelling west on the A39 from Porlock Hill (signposted Lynmouth) go up the hill (1 in 4 gradient - NOT SUITABLE FOR CARAVANS). After 6 miles, take a turn on your left onto New Road (signposted Oare, Malmsmead). Bear right onto New Road, coming to Oare.
Take the right unclassified road until you arrive at Malmsmead. Turn right onto Post Lane, keep on this road until you see a bridleway just before a Woodlands sign near the end of a large woodland. Park just off the bridleway and the woodland is on you left just after the bridleway going up through the woodlands.
