Okewill Wood is a beautiful mixed woodland near to the village of Bratton Fleming. The woodland is listed as ancient semi natural woodland on the government’s "magic" database. Predominantly oak, the woodland also has ash whilst within the lower canopy there is hazel, holly, birch and beech. A suitable mix for green woodwork, wildlife management and firewood, adhering to the relevant forestry guidelines. The woodland is accessed via a good forestry track with good internal access.
Just to the north of Okewill Wood the land is steeped with history where once stood an ancient settlement, this is shown on OS maps. The northern boundary consists of an attractive old traditional dry stone wall.
Wildlife thrives in the woodland. Roe and red deer frequent the woodland and you can look out for their footprints within Okewill Wood. There are a variety of beetles trundling through the undergrowth. The site is used by a variety of bird species and is excellent for bird watching. Jay’s hop from tree to tree, buzzards shriek overhead at times, woodpeckers skip effortlessly up trees and at dusk tawny owls investigate what is going on. There are signs of foxes as well.
The village of Bratton Fleming is situated approximately 7 miles north east of Barnstaple on a ridge extending from the foothills of Exmoor National Park. The village is approximately 3 miles from the park boundary and has the historic Church of St Peter, a pub and a busy shop within the village.
There are numerous archaeological features in the countryside surrounding the village including six separate groups of barrows within the parish of Bratton Fleming. These barrows are all Scheduled Ancient Monuments. North Thorne, which is a deserted medieval village located to the north of Bratton Fleming and immediately south of Wistlandpound Reservoir. The former railway line between Barnstaple and Lynton passes to the north of the village.

From Barnstaple town centre head north on the Goodleigh and Bratton Fleming road until you enter the village of Bratton Fleming. Drive past the village shop on your right and take the left turn at White Hart cross ( just before the public house called The White Hart ) sign posted Button and Rye Park and towards the church. Go past the church and the Primary school and continue down the hill. Stay left on the road at the fork, signposted to Rye Park. Carry on down the hill, over an old bridge until you come to a sharp right hand corner ( about 1/2 mile from the primary school ) where you will see a gate on the road directly in front of you, at this point just in front of the gate to the left take a very narrow track, proceed along this narrow track for about 300-400 metres and over a narrow bridge called Button Bridge, about 25 metres passed the bridge you will see our entrance gate on the left. Please park just inside this gate on the hard standing area.
Go through the gate, closing it behind you and you will see a wooden gate to your left that leads to Okewill Wood. Here you can either leave your vehicle and walk to the wood or call the agent to ask for the lock combination number.
Once through the wooden gate stay on the stone track, crossing the meadow and carry on through the wooded area until a track forks up the hill to the right. Take this track and follow up the hill until you come to a ride stop with an 'Okewill Wood' name sign and a small 'woodlands for sale' sign on it defining the entrance. The entrance to Okewill Wood is about 900 metres from the parking area.
