Steward Wood - SOLD, Devon - About 5 acres, £49,000

Steward Wood - SOLD

Steward Wood is a magical place to own. There are plentiful trees of a mixed age and species structure which is great for both the owner and as a habitat for a variety of flora and fauna. There are some fantastic oak trees in the woodland towering other trees such as birch, ash, holly and hazel coppice stools. This variety should satisfy the bodger, green woodworker, firewood processor and a shelter-building family.

When you explore Steward Wood you may meet the wildlife. A resident tawny owl often whispers when you stroll through the wood. Recently a great experience for a forester was seeing a brown hare trot past on a well-used track. The hare is a special creature, well known for its mystical symbolism. The woodland burts with wildlife and many bird species use it, from the woodpecker to nuthatch. The wood has been used for a survey for the pied flycatcher population which the purchaser can carry on supporting if desired. Both red and roe deer are frequent visitors as they like the tranquility this wood provides.

A series of footbridges crosses the natural springs which dissect the woodland. Be sure to explore the woodland beyond the footbridges as it is a wonderful area for observing wildlife and includes an area of wet woodland to the west of the wood. This area also has good potential for the creation of a pond.

Steward Wood is situated in between the mid Devon villages of Spreyton and Hittesleigh. Spreyton is a small village just north of Dartmoor and is famous for its connection to the tale of Old Uncle Tom Cobley. The popular local pub is named after the legendary Uncle Tom (Thomas) Cobley of Widecombe - fame for a man who was once a resident of Spreyton and later buried (1844) in the village graveyard.

Spreyton village has a BandB, a community run shop and a school. The old oak tree located in the local churchyard of St Michael’s is said to mark the very centre point of Devon. There is a bus service nearby to Exeter. If you are driving you will find the village located beside the A30.

The nearby village of Yeoford has a station on the Exeter to Barnstaple railway which makes it possible to bring your bicycle and cycle the 3 miles to Steward Wood. Yeoford train station has a glorious history and used to be one of the largest and most thriving stations in the area due partly to a sawmill in the village.

The purchasers of the woodland will be asked to enter into a covenant to ensure the quiet and peaceful enjoyment of adjoining woodlands and meadows.
