A perfect place to escape from it all, Waterhouse Wood is a wonderful mixed broadleaved woodland set in an attractive riverside location. The River Lew forms the eastern boundary of the wood and comes with single bank fishing rights; it also provides a good source of water, perhaps to aid creation of a Forest garden. From the entrance on the western boundary the wood gently slopes down towards the river, levelling along the riverbank, this would make a great base for camping, picnics and family forestry.
Roe deer have been spotted travelling through the wood and small clearings attract plenty of butterflies. There is an abundance of ground flora in Waterhouse Wood including a stunning carpet of bluebells in spring; wild garlic, snowdrops and wood anemones make up some of the other ground flora to be found here.
For those seeking seclusion yet good access this wood is ideal.
The entrance to the main track leading to Waterhouse Wood from the road has historical interest, apparently being the original drive to the Great Ashbury Manor. The manor no longer exists; the reason for this is the subject of many local tales. As you enter the main track to the wood, you go over an incredible stone bridge with a build date of 1830 marked on a stone above the arch (which you can see from the side of the bridge) and pass two large granite gateposts. All of these features have been recently re-discovered and are original features of the Manor. You can see the superb craftsmanship in the stone work which must have been a showpiece entrance created by the owners of the estate.
As you go along the track to Waterhouse Wood looking up the hill to the left you will see the historic St Mary's church. Ashbury is a place sprinkled in history - in 1912 a William Dennis, born in the village in 1886, died in the Titanic disaster.
The wood is easily accessed from the A30, yet in a tranquil location with nearby views of Dartmoor making a good base for exploring the wonders of Devon.
Within the vicinity of Ashbury you will find the well known Ashbury Golf Hotel and a few miles away the town of Okehampton is found. This has an excellent range of shops, cafes and pubs and it’s very own Castle ruins that are mentioned in the Domesday book. If you are looking for a place to lunch or stay when at the wood, the local Highwayman Inn is an unusual treat!
The purchasers of the woodland will be asked to enter into a covenant to ensure the quiet and peaceful enjoyment of adjoining woodlands and meadows.

Leave the A30 at the Sourton Cross Junction, and take the A386 towards Bideford. At first roundabout (Fowley Cross) take the 1st exit onto the A3079 signed towards Halwill, Holsworthy and Bude. Continue on this road for about 1.5 miles and take the first right turn, signed towards Ashbury. Continue straight on this road for about 3 miles until you pass the road sign at Kennel Bridge cross and see the 'Woodlands for sale' sign on your right hand side. Park carefully outside the entrance. The owner will be given a key to the padlock on the gate.
Climb carefully over the gate and walk up the left hand track. Follow this track all the way until you reach a meadow. Continue along the track, keeping the stock fence to your left. You will pass a car parking area for woodland owners on your right and then walk down the hill, still on the main track. At the bottom of the hill just after the corner you will see the entrance gate and name sign to Waterhouse Wood on your right.
