You are here: Home > Buying a Wood > Devon > Woolleigh Brook Wood - SOLD
Woolleigh Brook Wood is a wonderful mixed Devon woodland with oak and ash planted about 1900. Numerous self-seeded younger trees of good quality are now becoming established as well. Looking at the make up of the wood there are a number of over-grown hazel coppice stools giving an opportunity to re-establish a coppice rotation system. There are many other tree species to be found in Woolleigh Brook Wood including alder trees which provide leaves and catkins as food for numerous butterflies and moths. Alders are mainly wind-pollinated, but also visited by bees, and these are also good for the diverse ground flora found within the wood. Alders have also been used for making the bodies of electric guitars since the 1950s, including the Fender Stratocaster and Telecaster - alder is apparently appreciated for its bright tone. Willow trees can be found on the edge of the river bank giving some valuable shade for picnics and fishing.
There is long frontage to the Woolleigh Brook which has considerable potential for fishing - the sporting and fishing rights (single bank) go with this wood. Both salmon and sea-trout have been caught in the brook which is a direct tributary of the River Torridge nearby, well-known for its fishing. There is plenty of wildlife, including historical signs of the otter and a good ground flora.
Woolleigh Brook Wood is well located for exploring this beautiful part of Devon. The nearby town of Great Torrington provides much historical interest as an ancient settlement with lovely walks, shops and pubs. You can hire bikes here and enjoy the stunning route of the Tarka Trail, just outside the town. This is also a bicycle trail on an old railway line which will take you all the way to Barnstaple and Braunton, part of the beautiful north Devon coast. Within minutes of Woolleigh Brook Wood you will find the Royal Horticultural Society site of Rosemoor.
The purchasers of the woodland will be asked to enter into a covenant to ensure the quiet and peaceful enjoyment of adjoining woodlands and meadows.
