Ashurst Wood is part of a semi-natural woodland near Maldon in Essex. Full of wildlife, it is an absolute joy to be in. Walking through the woodland along by the stream you will come across colonies of wood ants, and at the bottom of the hill where the streams meet, a badgers' sett. Old maps show there has been woodland on this site for hundreds of years. Once called Birchwood, it gave its name to the road running along its southern boundary between Cock Clarks and Purleigh. Ashurst Wood is now mostly a hornbeam coppice with oak standards, but the odd birch and sweet chestnut can be found too. In the spring the woodland is carpeted with bluebells and wood anemones.
This woodland is of particular interest to those with a passion for nature and British wildlife. Because this is a special woodland the woodland is covered by a Tree Preservation Order (TPO).
The purchasers of the woodland will be asked to enter into a covenant to ensure the quiet and peaceful enjoyment of adjoining woodlands and meadows.
Boundaries: The boundaries of Ashurst Wood are indicated by Light Brown paint marked on fence posts and trees to the West, South and East with a hedge and ditch to the North.
This wood is no longer available. For more woods in the area, please see the regional page or contact our regional manager.

From Chelmsford follow the A414 through Danbury. At a mini roundabout carry straight across onto the B1010 signposted Purleigh. Take the next right signposted to Cock Clark. This is Marlpitts Lane. Follow this road into Cock Clarks. At the public house the 'Fox & Hounds' take a left turn into Birchwood Road. Continue along this road until you come to a woodland on the left, and just after the Woodlands sign is a gateway where you can pull in.
Take the track from the gate and follow through the woodland down into a valley to where the five bar access gate can be found on the left and Light Brown markings on the trees start. This is the start of Ashurst Wood.
