Cromwell Wood forms part of an ancient woodland previously known as Buslingthorpe Wood. Most of the original woodland was felled in 1960 and the area allowed to regenerate naturally with local species, ash and oak trees becoming prominent whilst large areas were left for coppice, thus Cromwell Wood now feels truly natural. Some of the original mature oaks were left standing, these now providing shelter to many other trees including ash, willow, aspen, hazel, blackthorn fir and hawthorn.
Cromwell Wood is bordered by farmland on the southern side this ensures that this part of the woodland gets plenty of sunlight and access to views across arable fields through the blackthorn and hawthorns surrounding the wood edge. Set on level ground with very good access along wide rides, Cromwell Wood is an ideal woodland for family forestry. To entrance to the wood is guarded by a culvert beyond which runs a very wide open ride leading to a glade. This is a perfect spot to camp or picnic and one can imagine oneself spending hours relaxing within it. Another small glade can be found within the thick coppice totally out of sight from the outside world.
As the woodland forms part of a much larger woodland wildlife habitat, it is home to a variety of animals including muntjac deer, roe deer, hares, rabbits and squirrels. Willow warbler and woodcock have been sighted here as the habitat appears ideal for them.
The woodland is incredibly thick in parts and it is easy to disappear from view, while other more accessible places give a varied habitat. Anyone interested in coppicing or green wood-crafts would find this a suitable woodland as it has some well established areas of sustainable coppice. Many of the trees in Cromwell Wood are still in their early years and the owner will have the pleasure of watching their woodland grow and mature.
The rides and glades have recently been re-established and are already showing excellent signs of regrowth. These rides will flourish over the next year and they provide the woodland with open spaces for "edge species" and small mammals. New sedges and grass will encourage deer, hares and rabbits as well as a host of insects and bird life.
The woodland is only ten minutes south of the thriving town of Market Rasen, north east of Nottingham and south west of Grimsby. It is surrounded by small hamlets many of which have bed and breakfast accommodation and good local pubs. Kingthorpe Manor Farm is an award winning luxury bed and breakfast within a short drive from the wood and is highly recommended.
Particulars and plans were prepared by our local manager, Matt Marples.
