Harrowden Wood is located at the centre of a larger woodland which has been identified as an important example of ancient woodland. Harrowden Wood is accessed via a wide ride which has farmland to the right and private woodland on the left. If you arrive early and move slowly you may catch a glimpse of the muntjac deer, roe deer and hares, that are resident within the woodland as they return from foraging on the fields. The chattering of blackbirds along with the call of a buzzard fill the air and during the winter months woodcock migrate to the woodland feeding in the soft soil.
As this is a site of ancient woodland it has a wonderful feeling of permanence. The majestic standards of oak and ash are like sentinels towering over the understory of hazel, field maple and hawthorn. In turn these shade and give cover to the woodland ground flora, rich with wildflowers such as bluebell, anemone, wild garlic and various orchids for which the woodland gains its SSSI rating (site of scientific interest).
The entrance is marked by a ride stop which has a small open space directly behind it perfect for setting up camp before heading into the depths of the woodland. Although quite dense in places, once you are beneath the canopy it is easy to walk through most of the woodland. A few fallen trees offer cover for wildlife and a very healthy understorey makes it easy to disappear from view. Fallen trees make beetle banks and homes for mice and small mammals and the old ditches provide perfect habitat for woodcock who overwinter in the woodland.
All sides of the woodland are bordered by other areas of private woodlands ensuring privacy and seclusion; yet with good access and conveniently located being only 11 miles from the town of Northampton. It is surrounded by villages and agricultural farmland and offers an ideal rural retreat and is equidistant from the M1 and A1 providing good access from almost anywhere.
Particulars and plans were prepared by our local manager, Matt Marples.
The purchasers of the woodland will be asked to enter into a covenant to ensure the quiet and peaceful enjoyment of adjoining woodlands and meadows.
