Hood Wood, Lincolnshire - Nearly 4 ½ acres, £39,000

Hood Wood

Protected by a deep moat-like ditch, you access Hood Wood across a newly built culvert. Behind the entrance a path leads you into a small glade with a post bench at the far end. Despite only being a few metres into your wood you are already out of site from the main ride and have a feeling of seclusion. If you proceed further into the woodland past young oaks and ash coppice you will find another even more secluded glade which, if cleared, would make a perfect camp site, being central in the wood and on level ground.

Hood Wood forms part of an ancient woodland  known as Buslingthorpe Wood.  Most of the original woodland was felled in 1960 and the area allowed to regenerate naturally with ash and oak trees becoming prominent whilst large areas were left for coppice. Thus Hood Wood now feels truly natural. A few original mature oaks were left standing, these now providing shelter to many other trees including ash, willow, aspen, hazel, blackthorn and hawthorn.

Set on level ground with very good access along wide rides, Hood Wood is an ideal woodland for family forestry. As the woodland forms part of a much larger woodland wildlife habitat, it is home to a variety of animals including muntjac deer, roe deer, hares, rabbits and squirrels. Willow warbler and woodcock have been sighted here.

The woodland is incredibly thick in parts and it is easy to disappear from view, while other more accessible parts are more varied.  Anyone interested in coppicing or green wood-crafts would find this a suitable woodland as it has some well established areas of sustainable coppice.  Many of the trees in Hood Wood are still young and the owner will have the pleasure of watching them grow and mature.  When viewing the woodland  please take into account that the rides and glades have recently been re-established.  These rides will flourish over the next year and they provide the woodland with open spaces for "edge species" and small mammals.  New sedges and grass will encourage the deer, hares and rabbits as well as a host of insects and bird life.

The woodland is only ten minutes south of the thriving town of Market Rasen, north east of Nottingham and south west of Grimsby. It is surrounded by small hamlets many of which have bed and breakfast accommodation and good pubs.  Kingthorpe Manor Farm  is an award winning luxury bed and breakfast within a short drive from the wood and is highly recommended. Dinner is available if pre-booked and is a true feast of welcome after a day in your woodland.
