Nene Wood has much to offer with a wide variety of habitats including thick coppice and open glades. Having no public access or footpaths this is an ideal retreat. It is located on the north west corner of a larger wood known as "Odd Quarter Wood", and is bordered by areas of private woodland to the south and east and with open farmland to the north. The resident deer population love the farmland boundaries and they rest in the warm sunlight which filters through the trees and lights up this section of woodland.
The woodland is made up mainly of mature oaks and ash with some Scots pine, birch and mature coppice stools; these sit comfortably above lots of smaller species of coppice including field maple, hazel, hawthorn and blackthorn. The woodland is, however, particularly notable as a whole for its rare wild service trees.
A good depth of leaf mulch helps the woodland plant life which includes small areas of bluebells, primrose and wood anemone in spring. Wildlife is in abundance and the wood is home to muntjac and roe deer. Red and Chinese water deer have also been observed in the nearby fields. Lots of deer couches or scrapes (places where the deer rest) can be found along the woodland boundary and on the edges of glades.
The woodland originally formed part of the famous Monks Wood which lies to the south. Monks Wood is now a wildlife reserve and over 1,000 species of beetle and butterfly have been recorded in this area. This has huge benefit to Nene Wood which forms part of a much larger protected habitat.
Conveniently located under 5 minutes' drive from the A1, just south of Sawtry. There are excellent local services close by including a restaurant and motel within minutes.
As this is a special woodland it is protected as a SSSI (Site of Special Scientific Interest). A new owner will have the pleasure of knowing that they are the custodians of a nationally recognised woodland. This wood should be viewed to appreciate its true beauty, being level with good access and easy to walk through.
The purchasers of the woodland will be asked to enter into a covenant to ensure the quiet and peaceful enjoyment of adjoining woodlands and meadows.
