Strangers Wood, Norfolk - Over 2 ½ acres, £35,000

Strangers Wood

Strangers Wood is named after the Elizabethan Strangers, often referred to as just the Strangers, were a group of Protestant refugees seeking political asylum from the Catholic Low Countries, who settled in and around Norwich. The first group came from Flanders in 1565, but many more followed, eventually making up a third of the population of Norwich. Like Norwich this woodland offers sanctuary for those looking to escape. The compact size makes the wood easily manageable yet its topography ensures privacy.

The larger area of woodland in which Strangers Wood lies is known as Primrose Grove and in spring both bluebells and primroses adorn the woodland floor these flowers being a good indicator of the woodlands ancient past. The hills of Ringland in which this woodland is situated are thought to be a result of glacier deposits called a moraine. These deposits create the wonderfully well-drained slopes as they are filled with small stones and flints. Even through our wettest winters the woodland remains good underfoot.

Made up of two very distinct areas. The south western area is mainly mature conifer, these have an attractive under-storey with areas of bluebells and bramble which provide the local wildlife plenty of food and cover. This area is a wonderful place to sit and watch for deer as they meander along the wood edge. A bench is located here so you can sit and enjoy the sunset over neighbouring fields whilst waiting for a sighting of these timid creatures.

The north eastern part of the woodland is mostly beech trees, with some other species present including sweet chestnut, oak, cherry and silver birch and pine which provide diversity. The ground here is more open and makes an ideal area to set up camp. This upper end of the woodland provides a feeling of seclusion that is difficult to find in Southern England and time spent here leaves you feeling regenerated.

Strangers Wood is accessed via a good track suitable for most vehicles. A locked gate at the road-side adds security and with no public access or footpaths makes the woodland wonderfully quiet and secure.

The woodland is easily found. Located just off the A47 under half a mile from the centre of the village of Ringland and being under 10 miles from the centre of Norwich it has great possibilities for anyone looking for a country retreat.
