Coed y Gigfran is located in a quiet and little explored valley in the Snowdonia National Park, just outside the picturesque town of Dolgellau. Ravens can often be seen flying high overhead and their calls can be heard from the woodland. The woodland faces south-east and gets good levels of sunshine, even catching the morning sun throughout the winter.
This woodland contains a good range of both conifers and broadleaved trees. There are distinct patches of northern red oak (Quercus rubra), larch, sweet chestnut, birch, pine and rowan.
There is good access to the woodland. From the public lane, a good stone surfaced track allows easy two-wheel-drive access across adjoining fields to a good sized shared parking area located right by the wood. From here the track continues along the lower boundary of Coed y Gigfran, then turns and gets steeper and goes along the upper boundary providing four-wheel-drive access to a private parking area at the higher edge of the wood.
From this private parking area a very wide grassy track follows the north boundary and provides a good sized level grassy area, useful for pitching tents, before getting steeper as it continues along the north boundary. Adjacent to this are terraced wooded areas that then slope away to steep ground.
There are many excellent walks into the surrounding countryside directly from the woodland, including an easy stroll around Llyn Gwernan. The Gwernan Lake Hotel is also within easy walking distance across the other side of the lake. A much longer trail but still easy walking or cycling can be found very close by in the Mawddach valley. For the more adventurous it is possible to walk from the woodland and climb the pony path to the summit of Cadair Idris. There are many more walks in the local area, for example the precipice walk just a few miles away in the next valley. Coed y Gigfran could make the perfect base for exploring southern Snowdonia.
Particulars and plans were prepared by our local manager, Rob Starbuck. Photographs were taken in August 2012.
The purchasers of the woodland will be asked to enter into a covenant to ensure the quiet and peaceful enjoyment of adjoining woodlands and meadows.
