Located close to the village of Whitford in Flintshire in north east Wales, Pennant Wood is an unusual mixed woodland that used to be part of the Downing Estate. It was once owned by the Pennant family who held estates in the Whitford and Holywell areas continuously from the 1450s until the middle of the 19th century. The woodland comprises mainly of yew and sycamore but also with many other tree species including, cherry, alder, elm, ash, beech, horse-chestnut, holly and hazel.
The wood runs along a valley has an excellent track allowing vehicle access all the way through the land. Most of the track is well surfaced with stone and it is wide enough in several places to allow vehicle turning. This track was once the main entrance drive to Downing hall, the ruin of which now lies just to the left after you come through the gate. The track is bordered on both sides by yew trees and these also predominate in the northern end of the woodland. There is a stream running the entire length of the woodland, close to the western boundary, and just to the west of the stream are the remnants of pools that were once used as a fish hatchery. Both here and to the south sycamore is the main tree species.
The terrain is very varied. The woodland is roughly laid out in a terraced fashion with the eastern edge being the highest ground. From there it slopes down to the level track area and then it runs down to the west where it meets the stream and western boundary. At that point there is plenty of fairly level ground.
There are some old stone walls towards the north end of the woodland, including a well-preserved archway.
Much of the ground, particularly around the stream area, is extensively covered with ferns and dogs mercury indicating the ancient nature of this woodland. There is also some laurel and occasional rhododendron in some areas of the woodland.
Particulars and plans were prepared by our local manager, Rob Starbuck. Photographs were taken in October 2011.
The purchasers of the woodland will be asked to enter into a covenant to ensure the quiet and peaceful enjoyment of adjoining woodlands and meadows.

Boundaries:
Most of the short southern boundary is fenced where it meets other private woodland. The eastern boundary also follows a fence where it adjoins grazing land and a private garden. The western boundary follows a tumbled down fence, running parallel to a stream which it crosses at one point. All boundaries are marked indicatively with blue paint on trees and posts.
This wood is no longer available. For more woods in the area, please see the regional page or contact our regional manager.

Take junction 31 off the A55 signposted towards Holywell. At the roundabout take the exit towards Whitford. At the next roundabout go straight on and then immediately take the first right towards Whitford. When you arrive in the village turn right at the staggered crossroads. Then take the first left onto a narrow lane. You will shortly arrive at a T junction where you should turn left.
Continue for about 500 m and then turn left at the sign reading 'The Downing, private road'. Follow this driveway around a bend to the right and then park close to the wooden gate across the track. Please park tucked close into the wall to the left of the gate whilst being careful not to obstruct the access.
The gate is locked: either climb the hinge end of the gate, or step through the gap in the fence to the right of the gate. From here continue on foot along the track to the north. Shortly you will see our 'for sale' board that is just within the boundary of Pennant Wood.
