Description: An oak and birch conservation woodland growing on the gentle slopes of a south-west facing hillside full of geological interest.
Outcrops of boulders abut level areas and old workings where millstone was removed make interesting sunken pathways. The small rock faces could be used for bouldering and clambering over.
Apart from the oak and birch, there are also sycamore, ash, willow, rowan and sweet chestnut. Some of the oaks are quite large feature trees and support a great diversity of insect life. Heather and bilberry patches are frequent and mix with ferns on the woodland floor.
Bird life in the wood is varied with all three native species of woodpecker, tree creepers and many other woodland birds, whilst on the ground there is evidence of badgers, foxes and deer.
A new track leads to a level area suitable for parking and camping. Access around the wood is easy due to the generally open character of the woodland.
Access: is from Oughtibridge Lane along a shared track up to the wood and along the north-eastern boundary. Within the wood are a number of paths which give access thoughout the site. Purchasers will have a key to the shared access gate.
History: Bradfield Wood is part of Great Hollins and Beeley Wood which has a long history closely connected with the steel industry in the area. Ganister, a type of sandstone which was used to make fire bricks to line the blast furnaces in the works located in the valley bottom, was mined using the drift mine method. This practice ceased in the early 1900s. Looking further back into history, monks from Ecclesfield Priory were permitted to graze their livestock in the woodland as early as 1161.
The purchasers of the woodland will be asked to enter into a covenant to ensure the quiet and peaceful enjoyment of adjoining woodlands and meadows.
