Description: Situated in a beautiful, slightly elevated, position, Landrigg Wood is less than a mile from the southern tip of Lake Windermere. During the winter months when the Larch trees have shed their needles, the foot of the lake can be glimpsed with Gummers How and the rest of the Lakeland fells beyond. Saskills is to the east.
Whilst sitting on the bench with the view before, the sharp eyed observer will be able to watch woodpeckers, listen to the call of bullfinches and the mew of buzzards overhead. The signs of both roe deer and red are all around.
A few years ago the spruce was thinned out leaving some specimen larch trees and a wide selection of other species. There is a large clearing in the centre of the wood which provides an ideal opportunity to plant and nurture some new trees. Seedlings from the larger trees around the edge of the wood are starting to regenerate and these could be nurtured and encouraged. These trees include cherry, birch, alder, rowan, willow and sycamore. Also present in the wood are a good selection of mosses, lichens and ferns as well as wild raspberries and blackberries. There are a few foxgloves in the early summer and the occasional gorse adds some year-round colour. A small beck flows through a sycamore grove making an attractive feature. Close to a newly formed small pool, we have created a level area with a bench. This which could be used for occasional camping. A track leads to this area from the entrance. The wood is enclosed in a taditional fells stone wall and is subject to the CROW Act 2000, meaning there is public access on foot only.
Access: Is via Hazelrigg Lane through Canny Hill from the A590(T). There is a communal hard standing area for parking just at the shared entrance. Landrigg Wood is accessed from the ride stop entrance where a track leads to a small levelled parking and camping area.
The Area: With Lakeland fells to the north and Morcambe Bay to the south Landrigg Wood is perfectly located for exploration of all that the Lake District Natioanl Park has to offer. Whether sightseeing in a vehicle or taking to the fells on foot the list of things to do is endless. Windermere cruises run from Bowness, Ambleside and Lakeside which are all close at hand. There is plenty of B+B and camping accommodation in the local area.
The purchasers of the woodland will be asked to enter into a covenant to ensure the quiet and peaceful enjoyment of adjoining woodlands and meadows.
