Situated amidst quiet farmland Oxslip Wood is a peaceful mature woodland.
Initially the access track runs between a stand of splendid, mature Scots pine, changing to a younger section of Norway spruce. Sunlight readily penetrates to the woodland floor where wild strawberry and foxglove are among young native broadleaves. A small stream fringed by horsetail fern is an obvious focus for deer and badger. The level ground makes for easy walking and the open canopy gives a light, airy feel.
The further reaches of the wood are a more recent plantation of Norway spruce which has developed well. The fringe growth of ash, willow, elm and hawthorn gives a good balance.
Access: this is immediately off the B6307 with a parking area just inside the gate. There is a right of way along the track from this gate. Half way along this track and on the right there's the ridestop and entrance to Oxslip Wood. When viewing park by the main gate, walk in and take the path right which goes through the wood to the open area overlooking the small stream. Continue to the internal track which gives access to the further parts of the wood.
Note: Because of the wet summer we've been unable to complete the track up to the entrance. As soon as winter frosts arrive and the ground hardens we'll get this done.
Sporting rights are included.
Surrounding Area: Oxslip Wood is part of a much larger area of woodland which runs down to the River Tyne. The Tyne is considered to be England's best salmon river which gives the opportunity for excellent fishing. This is a quiet rural setting with many public footpaths and good walking. Nearby is Hadrian's Wall with the more challenging Hadrian's Wall long-distance path.
The attractive market towns of Hexham with its historic abbey and Roman Corbridge lie a short drive away. Rowing and canoeing are popular from Tyne Green riverside park.
The purchasers of the woodland will be asked to enter into a covenant to ensure the quiet and peaceful enjoyment of adjoining woodlands and meadows.
