Rocher Wood, Yorkshire - Over 4 acres, £36,000

Rocher Wood

Description: Rocher Wood is growing on a sunny and well draining slope, close to Oughtibridge near Sheffield.

The woodland is of a delightful mixed age and is typically made up of wonderful mature oaks with character, large birch, with splendid beech toward the lower reaches of the wood. The ground is fertile and supports vigorous regeneration; beneath the larger trees plenty of young trees are seeding themselves and flourishing and could be easily transplanted from this nursery. The ground flora is similarly healthy and thriving and includes wood sorrel, small patches of blackberry, bluebells that will provide a good show in the spring, ferns and bracken.

The access track defining part of the north east boundary of the woodland, forms a substantial clearing that promotes a contrasting rich habitat that is ideal for butterflies and other wildlife, in addition to the woodland itself.

Keen naturalists may be lucky enough to spot one of Britain’s harmless grass snakes basking on a sunny bank.

Another attractive feature of the land is the old dry-stone wall that forms the southwest boundary of the wood.

Access: From Oughtibridge Lane, along a shared track shown green on the maps below, up to the wood to where the private track leads to the parking area. The woodland can easily be accessed on foot beyond this point. Purchasers will be provided with a key to the shared main access gate.

History: Rocher Wood is part of Great Hollins and Beeley Wood which has a long history closely connected with the steel industry in the area. Ganister, a type of sandstone which was used to make fire bricks to line the blast furnaces in the works located in the valley bottom, and was mined using the drift mine method: this practice ceased in the early 1900's. Looking further back into history it is recorded that monks from Ecclesfield Priory were permitted to graze their livestock in the woodland as early as 1161.

The purchasers of the woodland will be asked to enter into a covenant to ensure the quiet and peaceful enjoyment of adjoining woodlands and meadows.
