Westbarr Wood - SOLD, Stirling - About 6½ acres, £49,000

 Westbarr Wood - SOLD

Description: Westbarr Wood is an uplifting woodland with a balanced combination of terrains and wildlife. Level glades and undulating stream gullies and ridges combine with regenerating birch woodland and ancient Scots pine, beech, oak and spruce remnants. These surviving grand specimens beguile with their timeless majesty. Looking out across the large bracken and grass glades in the centre, and set against the birch areas either side, you can distinguish the silhouettes of a full crown sessile oak, a gnarled Scots pine or a broad low-branched beech which sheds a circular carpet of bronze leaves in autumn.

The birch wood to the east also harbours some willow, alder and Norway spruce, and has a small spring-fed stream coursing through the middle. Evidence of roe deer is apparent on trails and at stream crossing points, and they can most often be glimpsed at dusk or dawn.

The wet gully and high ridge area to the west sees mature silver birch, rowan and ash trees added to the landscape as well as some rocky outcrops and distant views west to the surrounding hills. Woodpigeon, jay, chaffinch and long-tailed tits can be spotted amidst these native broadleaves, and a great spotted woodpecker is heard occasionally working on some standing dead wood.

Internal access is provided via a hard grassy track leading to a parking area and a level clearing with adjacent rustic bench (as shown on the detailed map). This spot is ideal for relaxing by a campfire, pitching a tent or launching forays to gather the fruits, or simply marvel at the wonders, of nature.

Access: is via a shared hard access track (shown in green on the detailed maps) suitable for 4WD vehicles which leads from the minor public road up a gradual incline to the wood at the top. There is shared parking at the bottom quarry area if required.

Surrounding area: Westbarr Wood lies in the west corner of a historical semi-natural ancient woodland (SNAW) known as Barr Wood forest in peaceful countryside between the Touch Hills and Carron Valley. Five miles from the historic city of Stirling and 30 and 45 minutes respectively from Glasgow and Edinburgh.

The purchasers of the woodland will be asked to enter into a covenant to ensure the quiet and peaceful enjoyment of adjoining woodlands and meadows.

There is a growing interest in hut, bothy and temporary shelter building, especially in Scotland; for those interested in erecting a hut or shelter, here is some interesting and very helpful guidance from Reforesting Scotland’s Thousand Hut Campaign. Your Local Planning Authority should also be consulted.
