Description: Colm Wood is a young mainly conifer woodland situated in peaceful surroundings just to the north of Aberdeen. The southern aspect of the wood affords good open views across fields with a variety of farmland birds visiting the grassy field margins.
The bulk of the woodland was planted in 1999 on previous farmland and has reached a good height and density already, with diverse fungi on the floor indicating a healthy mycorrhizal partnership. The trees are mainly of spruce with patches of broadleaf species planted on the edges, with silver birch and rowan in the more exposed southerly areas, sessile oak and ash in the sheltered northern corner and willow and alder in the wetter southeast corner. The gently undulating contours of the land drain most of the water to this corner where a rush-covered area may be suitable for a small wildlife pond.
Round this corner to the south is a bright and private parking area and occasional camping spot from where some brashed paths lead further into and around the wood.
There is an internal vehicular access track/ride leading along the southern boundary to the parking area and the track also continues around the east and north perimeter.
The aerial view is several years old and shows the wood just after planting. It looks very different now!
Note: we are repairing a blocked drain at present a short way down the access track.
Access: Access is provided directly via a private gate entrance off the minor public road to the southwest.
Sporting rights: are included.
Surrounding Area: Colm Wood is part of a larger planted area of woodland now known as Lairshill Woods, also previously known as Paradise Woods. The villages of Newmachar and Hatton of Fintray are nearby, as is the Kirkhill Forest and Formartine and Buchan Way cycling/walking routes. The coast and secluded beaches of Balmedie and Newburgh, as well as Dyce, Inverurie and Aberdeen, are all within 20 minutes' drive.
