Culley Wood - SOLD, Fife - Just under 6 ½ acres, £45,000

Culley Wood - SOLD

The name Culley, derived from gaelic, means quite literally, the woods. In this particular instance Culley Wood is part of wider woodland known as Balmule, named after the nearby Balmule House.

The woods were planted about twenty years ago and have grown well to reach a productive but yet still manageable size: in particular the sheer variety of species within the woods is impressive and supports a wide number of bird, insect and animal species. The planting was well planned and the trees have continued to flourish with well spaced pockets of ash, sycamore, birch, alder and oak to name but a few. Unusually, the understory is grassy and well clear of bramble that can sometimes make initial hard work for the new woodland owner.

Sympathetic and selective thinning would create some more open clearings and glades within the wood, much improving it by allowing more light to reach the woodland floor. In turn this would encourage more plant and flower species to establish, which in turn would attract more insects searching for nectar.

The burn running along the northern boundary, rich in reeds and rushes, supports visiting animals such as deer coming to drink as well as a huge variety of invertebrates that provide food for the birdlife. As well as the joyful song of the common small bird species such as tits and blackbirds the patient observer may spot the beautiful but elusive jay as well as buzzards cruising overhead looking for carrion.

Access to the wood is very good with its own private entrance off a minor 'B' road with a lockable metal gate. The northern boundary of Linn Burn, sometimes known as Meldrum's Mill Burn, is a sizeable fast flowing stream, the western boundary is a disused railway embankment and the eastern boundary is a line of turquoise painted posts.

Although there are no marked internal tracks as such, it is open enough to walk freely throughout the woodland: children and older visitors to the wood will enjoy the unrivalled space to explore, while close to the entrance of the woods there is a bench for the woodland worker to rest and relax.

As well as being an ideal opportunity for a family friendly, amenity woodland, Culley Wood will provide an ample return in the supply of sustainable firewood for domestic heating.

Surrounding area:

Culley Wood is located within 15 minutes from Dunfermline which up until the 17th Century was the royal capital of Scotland and centrally located for Glasgow , Edinburgh and Stirling. Fife, bounded to the north by the Firth of Tay and to the south by the Firth of Forth, is a natural peninsula where political boundaries have changed little over the ages. Legend has it that the Pictish realm was divided into seven sub-kingdoms or provinces, one of which went on to become Fife.

To the north beyond the hill and woods is Commerce Park, an old WW2 supply depot for the naval bases at Rossyth, now converted mainly for use by local business and also home to Scotland's Vintage Bus Museum.

The purchasers of the woodland will be asked to enter into a covenant to ensure the quiet and peaceful enjoyment of adjoining woodlands and meadows.

There is a growing interest in hut, bothy and temporary shelter building, especially in Scotland; for those interested in erecting a hut or shelter, here is some interesting and very helpful guidance from Reforesting Scotland’s Thousand Hut Campaign. Your Local Planning Authority should also be consulted.
