Fliskmiln Wood, Fife - About 8 ¼ acres, £59,000

Fliskmiln Wood

The name of this wood derives from the local parish of Flisk, there also being Fliskmillan Farm and Fliskmillan Hill just north of the woods. The area is rich in Scottish history, the abbeys of Lindore and Balmerino, a Cistercian monastic community founded in 1227, which is nearby.

There are two distinct parts to Fliskmiln Wood, and upon entering it is apparent that young conifer predominate on the prominent flat plateau. A wood stacking area, accessible to a vehicle and trailer, is present here and this could easily be extended if required.

The winding path leads to the edge of this plateau, where there are two benches set in a clearing; an ideal camping spot for the woodland enthusiast. From here the landscape changes as it descends from the formal plantation; the trees become grander as the trail winds down the slope.

A trail has been cleared down into the main body of the wood, where numerous windblown young trees provide instant dry wood fuel to reward the efforts of the woodland worker.

At the bottom of this slope there are two more benches set along the field boundary, an excellent place to sit a while and take in the stunning views across the magnificent Tay. A number of other paths have been cut though this lower section: although it still has an open and wild feel, it is interesting and varied to explore. The flora and fauna is wild and varied too, and includes the beautiful red squirrel and roe deer. Where light penetrates the understory, seed banks are tapped and wild flowers abound. The energies of the conservationist would be repaid wonderfully by increasing further the habitat variation across the wood.

Access: There is a full right of access over a shared private road and woodland track leading up the hill for about 1 mile after turning off the A913. There is a secondary right of access from the minor road near Fliskmillan Farm.

The purchasers of the woodland will be asked to enter into a covenant to ensure the quiet and peaceful enjoyment of adjoining woodlands and meadows.

There is a growing interest in hut, bothy and temporary shelter building, especially in Scotland; for those interested in erecting a hut or shelter, here is some interesting and very helpful guidance from Reforesting Scotland’s Thousand Hut Campaign. Your Local Planning Authority should also be consulted.
