Pleachers Wood, Fife - About 7 ½ acres, £59,000

Pleachers Wood

Pleachers Wood is a remarkably diverse woodland and very unusually there are three defined zones with markedly different habitats in each one. There is good access to this very secluded and private woodland along the track from a secure gateway.

The area predominantly to the left of the track, is a semi wetland area rich in invertebrates and attendant plant species include bog cotton, iris and soft rush. The wealth of food and water attracts many bird species and supports many food chains. Water rises up through various issues and drains off to the North East and adjoining farmland. The land here is dominated by mature alder and willow with a beautiful understory of celandine and bluebells in Spring.

Beyond the ridestop is a flat and dry plateau fringed by young alder and hawthorn. This secluded and tranquil area is a warm sun trap and due to its favourable ground conditions it would be perfect for building a woodland shelter or store or for occasional camping. Early to late spring sees a multitude of wild flowers and herbs popping up and will be hugely rewarding to those interested in foraging or woodland education.

Lastly to the north-east corner is a stunning mix of mature deciduous species including the back bone of any established woodland, the oak and ash, beech and yew are all present too: this area has been left untouched apart from the tell-tale tracks of deer.

Pleachers Wood is located close to Fordell Firs a renowned Scout camp and to Fordell Castle, a restored 16th Century tower house. The wider woodland was once a quarry under the name of Pitadro Craigs and would have been part of the Fordell Estate. It is within half an hour of the centre of Edinburgh and ten minutes from Dunfermline.

The purchasers of the woodland will be asked to enter into a covenant to ensure the quiet and peaceful enjoyment of adjoining woodlands and meadows.

There is a growing interest in hut, bothy and temporary shelter building, especially in Scotland; for those interested in erecting a hut or shelter, here is some interesting and very helpful guidance from Reforesting Scotland’s Thousand Hut Campaign. Your Local Planning Authority should also be consulted.
